Giorni strani gli ultimi e anche i prossimi. Avere per casa un amico israeliano influenza il mio stato d’animo, come è ovvio che sia. Un conto è leggere del conflitto con Hamas, un conto è conoscere e vivere con qualcuno che ci è rimasto in mezzo, in un modo o in un altro. Tragico da qualsiasi punto di vista si guardi a questa e ad altre vicende simili. Non c’è molto altro da dire.

Da The Syllabus ho scoperto questo saggio sulla musica, dallo scrittore Michel Faber. Tema che mi interessa molto.

[…] in mundane truth, in modern mega-capitalist society, music is something we use. We use it constantly, in industrial quantities. We socialise to it, exercise to it, relax to it, screen out traffic noise with it, shop to it, show it off to visitors, advertise snack foods and mortgages with it, use it to hustle us out of bed in the morning or lull us to sleep at night, artificially boost our enthusiasm for sport or sex with it, add it to movies to underscore plot twists and explosions, take the edge off uncomfortable silences with it. Stressed consumers who long for the Zen tranquillity of the ancients play CDs or digital streams with titles like Moments of Silence or Evening Stillness – soft music to banish the wrong kind of quiet.

Music is a commodity. We get a lot of it for free, bundled in with other stuff we’re consuming, embedded in our routine transactions. But we also buy a lot of it. We stock up. Reviewers, and the artists themselves, promise us that if we give music the attention it deserves, it will reveal great depths, but our attention is often divided and we postpone the depths till later.

Ragionavo di antibiblioteca. Dai 5000 titoli di allora, ora ne ho poco più di 15000. La metà di quella di Umberto Eco, seppur digitale e non cartacea. Curare la propria collezione di libri è un lavoro. L’ho sempre pensato.
